The course introduces the main concepts of general and intercultural education, exploring education both as a fundamental human process and as a practice shaped by increasingly diverse societies. It examines the origins and aims of pedagogy, the differences between formal and informal education, and key educational approaches through the work of influential thinkers such as John Dewey, Maria Montessori, Lorenzo Milani, and Paulo Freire. The course also addresses themes related to children, families, and vulnerability, highlighting strategies to support educational processes.
In the second part, the course focuses on intercultural education, presenting key concepts such as assimilation, integration, ethnocentrism, and cultural relativism, and reflecting on the social construction of cultural and ethnic identities. It explores inclusive practices within educational systems and the role of teachers in promoting dialogue and participation in diverse contexts.
Finally, the course introduces practical tools such as community mapping to foster social inclusion and support networks, helping learners understand how education can contribute to more inclusive and socially responsible environments.
